My Story & Aspirations

I am a pre-dental student at Rutgers University studying Biological Sciences.

About me

I’m Betul Yildiz, an undergraduate researcher at Rutgers University–New Brunswick with academic interests in public health, oral health, mental health, and health communication. My work centers on understanding how biological, behavioral, and social factors intersect to influence health outcomes. I have aspirations of going to dental school to raise awareness about the gap between oral and mental health, as well as bringing light to the troubles of affordability families face for accessing dental care.

Research Interests

  • Oral–mental health connections

  • Health equity and access to care

  • Behavioral and community health

  • Science and health communication

  • Interdisciplinary approaches to patient-centered care

I am particularly interested in research that bridges clinical science with public health and policy.

Through coursework, lab experiences, and independent projects, I have developed skills in literature review, data analysis, scientific writing, and research synthesis. I approach research with an emphasis on ethical inquiry, collaboration, and real-world application.

Academic and Research Focus

Science Communication and Advocacy

I am passionate about making research accessible beyond academic spaces. My work often integrates writing and public facing communication to translate complex scientific and health concepts into clear, meaningful narratives that can inform education, advocacy, and healthcare practice.

Initiative Behind MSI

Mental Smiles Initiative (MSI) was created to bridge the gap between oral health, mental wellness, and behavioral health, recognizing that mental health struggles often show up first in oral health outcomes and healthcare avoidance. The initiative focuses on suicide prevention, mental health advocacy in healthcare spaces, and educating future healthcare professionals, especially pre-dental and pre-medical students, on providing holistic, patient-centered care that treats the mind and body as interconnected.
